915 Main Ave Project

When a project comes to you that is unique and inspiring, you take the bull by the horns and run with it! This project embodies “something you don’t get to do all the time”. This home is inspired by design and driven by perfection, which all led to quality and value.

Skywalkers unique, one-of-a-kind renovation project is located in the heart of historic downtown Durango, Colorado on Main Avenue. Skywalker Construction completely transformed and restored this old historic brick building, that was originally built in the 1800’s. Our in-house design team worked hand-in-hand with the owners to create a revamped space. 915 Main is located on the second floor of the historic building, above The Steaming Bean coffee shop. Second floor construction above a busy commercial space is incredibly challenging, but one Skywalker Construction concurred and achieved through innovative solutions while meeting quality and schedule goals. An added bonus? All neighbors were uninterrupted and happy during the process. Prior to the start of demolition, the existing space included three separate apartments. Fast forward, the newly remodeled 2600 sq. Ft., single-family loft is reminiscent of a vintage big-city warehouse accompanied by a twist of the old western charm. The home cascades space due to the 13 Ft ceilings. With plenty of room to entertain this home features an exquisite kitchen and living room. Accompanying the public space is 3 bedrooms and 2 and a half custom luxury bathrooms. There are not many other places like this on Main Avenue. No expenses were spared to bring this space into the twentieth century, everything from all new plumbing starting out from under the street, to all new electrical wiring throughout the building. The vintage brick was completely restored on the exterior, keeping the old but making sure it can last another 100 years. The roof was completely revamped, saving all the old trusses and original roof sheeting, but updating to a waterproof TPO membrane with ridged foam insulation underneath it. Skywalker Construction brought the interior original brickwork back to life from under an inch of old plaster, and exposing the incredible brick wall that spans at least 13 feet tall. With the roof now insulated on top, we were able to expose the entire vintage wood truss system built from rare old growth Douglas Fir. This added great depth to the space by opening the ceilings, giving the room a unique, great feel, and tying it into the brand new wood floors. The new flooring installed throughout the space by Skywalker Construction was a hickory wood with a matching brown stain, making the entire place pop and completing the warm feeling of excellence. Where allowed by the Durango Historic Preservation Board, new energy efficient windows were meticulously installed into the existing brick window openings, and then trimmed out to perfection with wood jams and casing that complemented the brick walls. The existing rooftop cupola was rebuilt with energy efficient windows and a new door leading to the spacious roof top deck area. The beautiful deck area overlooks all of downtown Durango with expansive views of the La Plata Mountains. The rebuilt cupola adds both direct and indirect natural light, and is just another of the many outstanding design features that we have created for this downtown loft.

This old building with its completely rehabbed living space is the perfect example of downtown urban living with a vintage twist and upscale living. A simple walk through of this historic, yet contemporary, space shows that living in the heart of downtown Durango on Main Avenue is a truly desirable lifestyle.
